The death toll has now exceeded two-thousand, while the full extent of the damage is yet to be known.Today, China has declared a day of mourning activities across the country for the victims.
All over the country, the Chinese national flag flies at half mast. Public entertainment activities have been suspended. And throughout the world, China's embassies and consulates are marking the day with similar events.
This is the second time China holds nationwide mourning activities for victims in a major natural disaster following the Wenchuan earthquake two years ago. Qinghai province is now observing three minutes of silence.
