Wildlife experts are assessing the impact of a massive oil slick that is moving closer to the Louisiana coast. Let's go to a bird sanctuary to see some of the damage, and the prevention measures that have been put in place.

Breton Island is home to 15 species of birds.

Wildlife experts have been checking water levels to assess the state of birds and other animals in the area.

Conservation concerns prompted officials to place floating barriers around the island, that trap the oil.

But high winds and record tides are still sending oil onto the shore.

Experts are concerned about the situation.

Randy Lanctot, executive director of Louisiana Wildlife Federation, said, "You can see them out there playing in the water like they are playing in a birdbath and you can imagine that happening with oil on the water. So it's a real serious threat to these birds."

Larry Schwager, president of National Wildlife Federation, said, "We don't know what the long-term implication of this huge oil spill are but the idea that we are putting big oil on top of big wildlife is a very troubling thing. When oil collides with wildlife, oil wins."

Meanwhile, at least 20 dead sea turtles have been washed up along the Mississippi Gulf coast.

Researchers are working to determine if their death is connected to the massive oil spill in the region.
