Archeologists have had a difficult time trying to protect the colored terra cotta warriors, as well as the colored pottery artifacts unearthed from the tombs near Xi'an, northwest China. But now, there's a new substance fresh out of the laboratory that can effectively solve the problem.
By applying the new substance to the colored pottery figurines will protect them from losing color, or decaying due to oxidation and weathering.
The development has solved a long-standing headache for archeologists, who have been searching for ways to retain the color of the artifacts excavation.
Wu Yongqi, director of Terra Cotta Museum, said, "The colored layer easily falls off after the relic is unearthed. Using this new substance, we can effectively stabilize the layer, and retain the color."
The new substance has been developed by archeologists of the Terra Cotta Museum in a suburb of Xi'an. According to the research team, the liquid will form a protective layer without harming the relics, while preserving their authenticity. The museum is also the key research base for the protection of colored pottery.
Thanks to the new substance and technology, the colored Terra Cotta Warriors and other colored pottery pieces are expected to retain their cherished color, despite the passage of time.
