To the World Cup now and the round of 16 has finished. The final 8 teams are now locked in after Paraguay beat Japan 5-3 in a penalty shoot out. Paraguay's victory has created two records in the history of the World Cup.

It's the first time Paraguay has made the final eight. It's also the first time the number of South American teams has exceeded European teams in the final eight, which is 4 to 3. In 1934, all the final eight teams were from Europe. In 1954, 1958 and 1994, all of the teams, except Brazil, were from Europe. European teams have taken up 6 places in the final eight six times in the event's history, and 5 seats for three times.
