On Monday, the second day since the festival's opening, the Vienna Philharmonic staged a concert in the Austrian town's Great Festival Hall, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The Vienna Philharmonic performed works by Beethoven, Pierre Boulez, and Anton Bruckner.
At 100 meters in width, the Great Festival Hall is one of the largest stages in the world. It was opened on July 26th, 1960 with a ceremony and a performance of Richard Strauss's "Rosenkavalier" conducted by Herbert Von Karajan.
Located in the west of Austria, Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart. Each summer for five weeks starting in late July, it holds its annual music festival with programs covering operas, concerts and plays.
This year, as the grand old event celebrates its 90th anniversary, a variety of programs will be held. One example, Valery Gergiev will present an important evening with the World Orchestra for Peace.
An exhibition will run parallel to the Festival to show what various artistic directors, boards of directors, and artists have written about the festival over the past 90 years.
