An explosion involving homemade fireworks has injured at least 56 people, mainly students, at a cheer-leading competition at a school in Subic Bay, in the Philippines.

Police say a bottle filled with gun powder was used to make lighting effects for Thursday's show. It was accidentally lit and exploded. The audience were hit by shrapnel. The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals and the man holding the bottle lost his right arm. Police say a criminal case may be filed against the school administrators if the investigation finds negligence on their part.
