South Korean farmers have sent 103 tons of rice to flood victims in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Two months of heavy summer rain hit food production hard in the DPRK.
Four trucks loaded with rice crossed the Demilitarized Zone and entered the DPRK on Thursday.
Even in a good year, the DPRK falls a million tons short of what's needed to feed its 23-million people. Some farmers in South say they hope the rice will ease the food shortage and contribute to reunification. Even before the flooding, the DPRK was believed to be under intense economic pressure.
It deepened last year with international sanctions imposed after a nuclear test.
