Sean Lien, the son of Lien Chan, the Kuomintang's honorary chairman, is in a stable condition after being wounded in a shooting as he was campaigning during the mayoral election campaign. Doctors at Taiwan University Hospital say Sean Lien's surgery has been successful and his face wound has cleared and been stitched.
Sean Lien was shot on the eve of Taiwan's mayoral and city council elections. The incident took place as he was campaigning for a Kuomintang candidate in Sinbei City Friday evening. The bullet went into his face and came out through his temple. A twenty-nine year old local resident died on the spot after being hit by a stray bullet. A suspect has been detained after he was found carrying a pistol and bullets. After the shooting, Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou called for KMT supporters to stay calm and cautioned that no abrupt speculation should be made before an investigation is completed.
