The well-known Chinese folklore hero, the Monkey King, is getting his 3D makeover. The film held its opening press conference on Sunday in Beijing, joined by a some of the film's cast. Hong Kong pop star Aaron Kwok cast as the Buffalo Demon King is expected to confront the Jade Emperor acted by Chow Yun-fat in the movie.

The film is based on the classic Chinese novel "The Journey To The West". It tells the story of a Buddhist monk's pilgrimage to India to collect religious texts. It's one of the best known pieces of Chinese mythology, and one of the few widely known outside of Asia. To create the 3D effects needed on "Monkey King", the films producers have employed a Hollywood team.

Popularity in 3D movies has grown fast in China with James Cameron's Hollywood sci-fi epic "Avatar" making 206 million US dollars in box office revenue. "Monkey King" is budgeted at 40 million US dollars and is expected to make positive returns at the domestic Chinese box-office when it opens in July 2012.
