The panda house at the Taipei Zoo will be closed for four days beginning Wednesday to let its inhabitants "Tuan Tuan" and "Yuan Yuan" try to mate.

The female "Yuanyuan" is in heat, but the male "Tuan Tuan" seems uninterested. As a result the staff at the zoo are trying to artificially inseminate her. The average pregnancy of a panda is about three to four months. If Yuanyuan is successfully impregnated, she would be the first Taiwan local panda to bear offspring.

The two pandas were given to the zoo by the mainland in 2008. Together the two names "Tuan yuan", means "reunion" in Chinese.
