The city of Handan in Hebei Province is one of the main planting areas of wheat in the country. The temperature is still low in the region but as the severe drought continues, locals are making do with what they can to save their plants.

In Guangping County in Handan, farmers are learning how to keep the soil's humidity constant. They use special tools to loosen the soil to prevent it from hardening during the drought. Locals say with this method, no plant will die due to the fast water evaporation in the soil, even when there's no irrigation for half a month.

A famer said, "It will work after the ground is scratched to two or three centimeters deep. The scratch should be even."

Another way to keep the humidity is to press down on the soil to fill the cracks caused by drought, then the water from underground can get up for the wheat's growth.

Zhao Xianfeng, Vice Mayor of Handan city, Hebei Province, said, "These methods are very necessary and economical. We will spend 15 to 20 days loosening all the farmland in the city, which will benefit the wheat's yielding."
