Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan Province, is once again at the forefront of China's green movement in the global "Earth Hour" Campaign to fight climate change. Female panda Mei Lan, has been chosen again as the global ambassador for the worldwide environmental program.
Mei Lan appeared at Earth Hour's 2011 launching ceremony in Chengdu. The city government hosted the "Melting Panda" event, where a number of life-sized panda ice sculptures were slowly melted under heat lamps. When Earth Hour commenced at 8:30 p.m., Mei Lan switched off the lights to protect the melting ice sculptures, sharing Chengdu's Earth Hour message to the world.
Yuan Bo, Chengdu reseach base of panda breeding, said, "The ice melts at room temperature and it makes a connection with global warming. The icebergs may melt slowly and people will not see them many years later. It reminds us of environmental protection and a low-carbon lifestyle."
