When he first burst onto the scene as a fresh faced youngster, Sergio Garcia appeared set to take the golf world by storm. But now, a decade or so later Sergio is still looking for his first major and has been left searching to re-find his form over the last couple of years.
However, a strong run of play of late has the Spaniard in a new state of mind, and his play thus far in Chengdu at the Volvo China Open reflects that. Our Jonas Gilbart had the chance to catch up with Garcia, and brings us this report.
Sergio Garcia, or "El Nino" as he is known to golf fans, has blown cold over the last couple of years but is starting to feel as if his game is turning around. With his play at the Volvo China Open, Garcia has put himself in position to claim his first win since 2008.
Sergio Garcia, Spanish Golfer, said, "It's definitely been a step forward, a step or two so I'm hoping to keep building on that...and a nice weekend here will definitely help."
Long known as one of the better ball strikers in golf, it's the putter that has often let Garcia down...but a change in putting grip, moving to "the claw" has given Garcia more confidence with the flatstick.
Sergio Garcia, Spanish Golfer, said, "It works. I feel like the good thing is, I'm a bit more consistent. Some days I make more putts than others. But, overall it's definitely been a step forward and that's a positive. "
A win here in Chengdu is certainly Garcia's aim...but perhaps more importantly he finds himself in a position he has not been in in quite some time...comfortable with his game once again.
Sergio Garcia, Spanish Golfer, said, "That's the goal, to play the best I can play and see if that's good enough. If someone else goes out there and shoots lights out, then good for him, we'll congratulate him. But at least if we go out there and play our best that helps us finish first, that will be welcome."
If Garcia is able to finish on top this week, it will be his first win since 2008 a win that also came in China, the HSBC Champions in Shanghai. Garcia, certainly hoping that China is once again the source of good fortune here in 2011.
