Hundreds of Christians and Muslims have clashed in downtown Cairo on Sunday, a day after 12 died in more religious fighting.

Sunday's protest developed into violent confrontation as a crowd of Muslim men took on a mob of Christians, the two groups pelted each other with stones. The protests then became running battles between demonstrators and security officers, with a number of casualties being reported.

The protests by the Christian group were calling for better protection of their rights and to continue calls for the removal of the military council leader ruling Egypt.Saturday's confrontation had been sparked by rumors that Christians had abducted a woman who converted to Islam.
