Syrian state television says 80 policemen have been killed in an armed ambush. The attack took place in a northern town that has recently experienced a major crackdown on anti-government protestors.
The report said security forces had been on their way to the town in response to calls for help from residents when they were attacked and killed in an ambush and explosion. Security forces have been conducting military operations in the town of Jisr al-Shughour for several days.
Human rights groups say at least 35 residents have been killed in the area since the operation began on Saturday. Syria's Interior Minister Ibrahim Shaar said on state TV the attackers would be dealt with according to the law.
