Tourists and Romans alike splashed themselves with water from some of the Italian city's famous fountains on Monday as temperatures climbed to 33 degrees.
Temperatures are set to reach as high as 37 or even 40 degrees in cities like Messina, Pescara and Perugia, well-above the seasonal average. Several cities have even been classified as "at risk" by Italian authorities.
Officials warn that the mix of humidity and hot weather could cause health problems for the population. Serbia's capital Belgrade also experienced 38 degree heat on Monday. And, just as in Rome, people were drawn to the city's fountains, even introducing their dogs to the water to cool them down.
