International and Afghanistan security forces examine the site of a suicide attack on the governor's compound in Charikar. |
Parwan Provincial Governor Adbul Basir Salangi said, "Their aim was to reach my office. We had security measures and we stopped them from reaching my office. My colleagues and I took AK-47s and started fighting with them and shot them, we did not leave the office. The fighting took about 50 minutes and all the suicide bombers were killed."
This was the second attack on Sa-langi, following a suicide bombing next to his office this past June. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has strongly condemned the bombing as a cowardly act of terrorism.
