Hop into almost any taxi in China and you can hear singing crickets. Drivers say the song of these little insects keeps them alert during their long days on the road. But crickets don't just make beautiful music. They're also great fighters.
Chinese people have been cricket fighting for nearly two millennia. The game began in the Tang Dynasty, developed in the Song Dynasty and reached its peak in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The game remains popular today, especially in Shanghai, where there are 20 cricket markets.
While cricket fighting is an old part of Chinese culture, it's new and exciting to foreigners. That's why the China Culture Center is introducing them to the world of cricket combat.
