Guests and celebrities have been mixing it up at a Christmas cake ceremony in India's southern city of Chennai. The event, which was attended by scores of visitors, is held annually in the run up to Christmas.

Chennai's cake mixing event is held every year, six weeks prior to Christmas. The time has to be precise, to allow the dough and other ingredients to become properly interwoven.

Once ready, the mixture is to be distributed among the guests.

Vairamani, pastry chef of Hotel Royal Le Meridian, Chennai, said, "This is a traditional authentic way of making the cake. We can make that without alcohol but that won't give the nice aroma. So, the cake will give a nice aroma, the spiced flavour will come"

The centuries old cake mixing ceremony is a ritual religiously followed all over the world, in the lead up to Christmas.

The mixing of the ingredients is meant to bring good luck for the festive season, and the coming year ahead.
