The Columbian rebel group, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, have executed four military hostages. Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos on Saturday denounced the killings as further proof of the group’s cruel nature.

FARC, the drug-funded guerilla group, killed the hostages as the government launched a botched mission to free them from a decade of captivity. This marks the most violent act by the group since government forces killed its leader and main ideologue Alfonso Cano, in a raid earlier this month.

The FARC, which funds its operations with extortion, as well as drug trafficking, has held scores of politicians, police officers and soldiers as hostages.
