A special police team to patrol the Mekong River has been set up in southwest China's Yunnan province.

It will take part in joint police patrols with counterparts from Laos, Myanmar and Thailand to maintain security along the river, a major transport route in the region.

Joint police patrols are expected to help restore shipping services that have been suspended since the cargo ship attack on October the 5th led to the deaths of 13 Chinese sailors. It aims to protect the safety of passengers and vessels, as well as reduce crime along the river.

Besides patrols, the team will carry out rescue operations and provide as much assistance as they can for passenger and commercial vessels on the river.
