The Japan Meteorological Agency says an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale jolted the eastern part of Japan's Honshu region. The tremor hit at 14:28 local time.
The hypocenter had a depth of 371 km, and was initially determined to be at 31.4 degrees north latitude, 138.6 degrees east longitude. The epicenter was 486 km Southeast of the capital Tokyo, which felt the tremor, but so far there have been no reports of casualties or property damage.
The agency also said there was no danger of a tsunami. On March 11th, 2011, the country's Northeast coast was struck by a magnitude 9 earthquakes and a massive tsunami, leaving as many as 23,000 people dead or missing.
