Bad weather hampers Spring Festival Travel Rush

The Spring Festival Travel Rush period enters its eighth day, and with the weekend, the number of travelers is really picking up.

Over the past few days, China's railways have carried around six million passengers, mostly college student and migrant workers heading home for the Chinese New Year. But bad weather is hampering their plans.

The National Meteorological Bureau says heavy rain and snow will continue to sweep across most parts of southern China. They fear this will impact transportation in the run up to the festival. The bureau advises travellers to keep a close watch on the weather forecast and take precautions when on the road.

The Spring Festival, which falls on January 23rd this year, and it's the most important national holiday. A total of 3.16 billion passenger trips are expected during the 40-day travel rush period that started on January 8.
