There've been blizzards in many parts of the country's northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, where temperatures have dropped to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Over in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius caused some water pipelines to crack - but local authorities say normal water supplies have been restored as of Monday.

In the capital Beijing, strong winds also brought a sudden temperature drop, with the local meteorological station issuing its first cold weather alert.

Finally, many shipping hubs around China's Bohai Sea are inaccessible, due to thick sea ice. According to the local oceanic administrator, the amount of ice is around 30 percent higher than this time last year, reaching a thickness of half a meter in some places.
