Burberry, McQueen shine at London Fashion Week

We wind up today's show with another look at the latest from London Fashion Week with Burberry's new collection and a debut offering from Alexander McQueen called the McQ line.

One of the biggest names at London Fashion Week, Burberry Prorsum, unleashes simulated rain on its parade at Hyde Park, which had a town-meets-country theme on Monday.

Tweed and cord were key, and bags had a distinctively country-living look. The classic Burberry mac was given a twist with belts and bows at the front. Pencil skirts had a zig-zag ruffle and T-shirts were printed with owls and partridges.

Speaking about the new collection, Chief creative officer Christopher Bailey said he was interested in familiar worlds.

British labels Burberry and McQ by Alexander McQueen turned up the glamour at London Fashion Week.

Christopher Bailey said, "You know I wanted the collection to be a celebration of these merging worlds. We talk so much of the physical and digital merging. I wanted that in the show as well so this merging of the town and field and the country merging into one but I also wanted it to be a very British very English show and have a sense of humour - make people smile as well."

And also on Monday, Sarah Burton, creative director of the Alexander McQueen fashion house, tried to create an enchanted forest in the center of London for the debut offering of the McQ line, aimed at younger, less affluent buyers.

The catwalk was covered with fallen leaves, and a realistic forest was created at one end of the hall at the Old Sorting Office in central London. Leaves fell near the conclusion of the show, as if by magic, buffeting a model dressed in a long white gown.

Most of the models had strange, saucer-like hairstyles, giving them a space-age, inhuman feel, and many wore military-style coat dresses embellished with beading and embroidery.

Monday's show marked the McQueen house's first London exhibit since the founder's death in 2010.
