Air travel within China is set to become a bit more expensive. The airlines are hiking the fuel surcharge for some domestic routes, from 130 yuan to 140 yuan. That takes effect today.

After the adjustment, domestic routes longer than eight hundred kilometres will incur a fuel surcharge of about 22 U.S. dollars.

But passengers travelling on routes shorter than eight hundred kilometres won't be affected by the increase.

Analysts say the hike is due to rising air fuel prices, and with fuel costs accounting for over 40 percent of overall expense of flying.
