It’s been two years since China rolled out its garbage recycling pilot program in major cities. Hangzhou in East China is one of them.
Children are encouraged to recycle waste in classes set up by the pilot community. They can also bring unused items from their homes to the class for resale. Labeled trash cans have tips telling people how to sort their rubbish.
The janitors keep track. Residents can get annual cash rewards for sorting their garbage properly. The program is proving so successful that over 80% of residents in the community are taking part.
