Tropical Storm Isaac has closed in on the US Gulf of Mexico coast. It threatens to make landfall between Florida and Louisiana as a full-blown hurricane.
The hurricane could reach land by midweek, the anniversary of devastating Hurricane Katrina seven years ago. Due to the bad weather, the Republican National Convention to nominate Mitt Romney as the party's challenger to President Barack Obama gaveled into session for just a few minutes in Tampa, Florida.

Romney's campaign looks forward to introducing their candidate to national television viewers with high-profile speeches from him, running mate Paul Ryan and party leaders. But the convention’s script was being hurriedly reshaped because of Isaac. Meanwhile, some 200 protesters have braved the inclement weather to protest Republican policies. Grievances range from immigration and the economy to health care and abortion.
