Turning to East China's Zhejiang Province, where the trial continues in a gutter oil case. The case is the first of its kind in China to go to court.

The trial on Wednesday featured a debate between prosecutors and the defence. 20 people are charged with profiting from the manufacturing and selling of gutter oil. Local police uncovered a small gutter oil processing workshop in Ningbo's Ninghai county and traced its origin to a major site for recycling gutter oil in Shandong province.

The defendants are accused of making up to 99 million yuan in illegal income from December 2007 until they were seized by the police. Gutter oil refers to recycled kitchen-waste oil dredged from gutters behind restaurants. In China, people making or selling gutter oil as food oil can be sentenced to life imprisonment or even death if their products kill or severely injure consumers.
