South Africa commemorated Heritage Day on Tuesday to celebrate the numerous cultures that make-up the Africa's Rainbow Nation. In the past few years the day which is a public holiday has also been called National Braai Day. It's named after the South Africans' love of braai-ing or barbeque-ing.
Braai is an Afrikaans word for grilling or barbeque-ing meat over hot coals and is a social custom practiced by South Africans across the cultural and political spectrum. It's such a popular national pastime, that South Africans just love to celebrate special occasions with a braai, from birthdays to dinner parties, informal get-togethers and traditional gatherings. So of course, Heritage Day is the perfect occasion to throw some coals on the fire.
From the tiniest villages, to the biggest towns and cities, people around South Africa are celebrating their heritage around a barbeque.

“It feels really great to be a South Africa, because we celebrate this day. All our cultures come together. Braai Day and Heritage Day do go well together. For me this is a great experience because I'm able to go out and have fun while in the meantime also celebrating my culture and somebody else's culture on this side, while we're eating meat and having fun and dancing as well."
"Heritage Day and Braai Day, to me, mean finding out about other people's culture. Finding out how the rest of South Africa is. I mean, at the end of the day it is the Rainbow Nation. There's quite a lot of diversity in the country."
"We're celebrating Heritage Day, but in a different way, in a Bavarian. I'm married to a German, so I'm a German, so I wear as German. “
"It reminds us how diverse South Africa is. It reminds us to be Proudly South African. It's our day."
And no Proudly South African Braai would be complete without pap, the South African name for a porridge made of maize meal. The Braaied meats also served with gravy, salad and a tomato and onion mix known as chakalaka. And even though South Africans will find any excuse to relax and have fun with some hot coals and cold beer. Their Heritage Day is a special day to remember all those who had made a contribution towards building their colorful Rainbow Nation.
