South Korea is about to hold a huge military exercise to strengthen combat ability against the DPRK.

The exercise begins on Thursday and will continue until Friday next week. South Korea's military says the week-long exercise will involve 240,000 army, navy, air force and marine corps personnel, as well as police officers. Over 60 submarines will be deployed. About 500 US soldiers will also take part.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said the exercise will focus on strengthening the troops' combat ability. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen in the past month after a series of maritime border confrontations, defections and a new US-South Korean deal to nearly triple the range of the South Korea’s missile systems.
