China's Hainan Island, which is China's smallest province. The island has raised its purchase limit of duty-free goods and loosened its age restriction to attract more tourists. This is the first adjustment since the adoption of a new duty-free policy in April 2011.
According to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance, the upper purchasing limit has been increased to 8 thousand yuan per person each time, from the previous limit of five thousand yuan. And shoppers who are 16 years of age or above can enjoy the duty-free policy, down from the previous requirement of 18.
What’s more, the policy also adds three more categories of duty-free goods: beauty and health care, cutleries and kitchenware, and toys.
Another change you may want to know when travelling to the island is that if you don't use up your 8,000 yuan worth of purchase limit, you can use the remaining quota to deduct tax duties on another item purchased.
