Friday has seen couples across China headed to city marriage registries, looking to marry on an auspicious date. Friday's date is 2-0-1-3-1-4, a date that contains special meaning in Chinese pronounciation. It is a day long-waited by many Chinese bachelors and bachelorettes, who believe that it is the best time in their life to end their unattached days.
Rushing to tie the knot. Numerically, Friday's date is a sequence of numbers that lovers can find only once in a lifetime.
In Chinese, the pronounciation of the date means "endless love till death."
Mrs Chen, Foshan of Guangdong province, said, "We promised to get married today a long time ago, if doomsday didn't come first."
They are one of many couples that arrived at a marriage registrys early in the morning.
Chilly weather would not stand in their way. And the online reservation list at marriage registration centres was already full.
A resident in Guangzhou of Guangdong province, said, "We picked this date, which means a lifetime of love."
But people were still flocking to try their luck for a vacancy. They said waiting was worthwhile.
Zhu Haijun in Guangzhou of Guangdong province, said, "We anticipated such a crowd, but we still decided to come anyway."
Wedding vows were the best result they could have. Nearly 5,000 couples said "I do" on this single day alone in Guangzhou.
But the final tally could be higher as it did not include people who walked in unannounced. Employees at marriage registries anticipated the busy day and worked extra hours. It's all about the numbers, they said.
