The Chinese Navy says a training exercise will be held in the Pacific Ocean, after ships sailed beyond islands off the country's coast.

A defense ministry statement says the exercises are a regular arrangement, and in line with the navy's annual training plan. No timetable has yet been given for the training maneuvers. The Chinese navy conducted seven similar exercises last year. Military analysts say China is planning to carry out long-term routine training in the western Pacific, which is suitable for deep water exercises.

The US navy has regularly held similar large-scale exercises in the Pacific Rim, as have the Japanese, Indian and Vietnamese.

A Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy fleet has set off from a military port in east China's Qingdao City for regular open-sea training in the West Pacific Ocean, military sources revealed Wednesday. [Xinhua]
