Five new cases of H7N9 were confirmed on Wednesday in east China's Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces and Shanghai mucipality. This brings the total number of bird flu infections to 33, with 9 deaths.
The latest infections include a 65-year-old farmer, who is being treated in a hospital in Zhejiang. The province now has 6 confirmed cases. Another 2 patients are in critical condition in Jiangsu, bringing the total number of cases there to 10. And two infections have also been reported in Shanghai, bringing the total infections there to fifteen, including five who have died.
Anhui Province has two cases, including one death. No evidence has been found of human-to-human transmission.
A four-year-old boy, one of China's H7N9 infections, has been discharged from a Shanghai hospital after fully recovering. Meanwhile, three people in southwest China's Guizhou Province have been detained by police for spreading a rumour about the deadly bird flu virus online.
As bird migration increases in spring season, health authorities have been closely monitoring migration routes to guard against possible spread of the virus.
