The Czech Republic is witnessing its worst flooding in decades, as rising waters threaten the capital’s historic city centre.

A spokeswoman for the state river management company said the Vltava River, which runs through central Prague, could peak by Monday afternoon. Soldiers erected metal barriers and volunteers piled up sandbags around the city to prevent the swollen River from overwhelming the city.

After the Vltava River rose after days of heavy rainfall, Czech authorities declared a state of emergency for regions badly hit by flooding, including the capital Prague.
