The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has confirmed that Snowden has left Hong Kong for Moscow on Sunday. Hong Kong authorities also officially informed the US government of his departure. Media reports say Snowden will not stay in Russia, with his final destination possibly being Ecuador or Iceland.
Edward Snowden left Hong Kong just a day after the US pressured Hong Kong to extradite him for espionage charges.
A Hong Kong SAR government spokesman said Snowden had left of his own free will.
Hong Kong has became the center of a growing controversy since the former NSA contractor fled to Hong Kong in early June to spill the US government's surveillance secrets.
Waves of petitions and parades were made by supporters in Hong Kong to safe their "hero."
But in his homeland, authorities have labelled him a traitor. The US government filed criminal charges against Snowden for espionage and urged Hong Kong to extradite him.
Before Snowden left the city, the South China Post offered new details about America's spying activities.
Snowden said the US had hacked China's Tsinghua University in Beijing and Chinese mobile phone companies. The US is also alleged to have hacked Asia Pacific fibre-optic network operator Pacnet based in Hong Kong.
The Post said Snowden had provided documents listing operational details of specific attacks on computers, including internet protocol addresses, over a four-year period.
