Two Chinese nationals and a Chinese-American are among nine foreign tourists killed by gunmen in Pakistan's northern territory of Gilgit. The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan has confirmed that one Chinese tourist was also wounded in the attack, but was rescued.
Others among the dead are five Ukrainians, one Russian and one Pakistani guide. The killing happened in a hotel, located at the foot of the Nanga Parbat mountain, in the Diamir area.
Pakistan's Interior Minister confirmed the casualties. The Chinese Embassy is now contacting the families of the victims, and has launched an emergency-response mechanism, demanding that Pakistani authorities properly handle the incident.
The embassy has also demanded that Pakistani authorities safeguard Chinese nationals in Pakistan and punish the murderers. Both the Pakistani Taliban and another militant group, the Jundullah have claimed responsibility for the attack.
A Pakistani Taliban spokesman has said the killings are retaliation for the death of Taliban deputy leader, Waliur Rehman, in a US drone attack on the 29th of May.
