The Russian television news station RT says the US army has confirmed it has prevented its personnel from viewing reports on the Snowden leaks at the Guardian newspaper's website.

A spokesman for the Army Network Enterprise Technology Command said in an email that the procedure was routine part of "network hygiene" measures to prevent unauthorized disclosures of sensitive information.

The Guardian's website has posted classified information regarding the US spy agency's surveillance activities leaked by Edward Snowden. The Army has blocked soldiers' access to this content and the Pentagon said personnel who download the sensitive information would be punished.

Rodney Shakespeare from the Global Justice Movement said in an RT program that the blocking move was ridiculous as the servicemen would still be able to read Guardian's publications outside the military compound.
