Prince William's wife, Kate Middleton, has given birth to a baby boy who is now third in line to the British throne.

The royal family announced that the heir was born at about 4:30 pm local time and weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces. Kensington Palace said that the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.

Kate and her son are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight. There was no immediate word on the boy's name.
