Shanghai is sweltering through its hottest July since records began. The temperature for 24 days so far this month has reached 35 degrees Celsius, or higher.
Weather experts say cold air which usually helps cool the south-eastern provinces of China is staying away - leaving cities under clouds of hot air. Relief is still at least a week away.
The umbrellas are up across Shanghai. There's no rain in sight - but shade is in short supply. Anything, to escape the heat.
