In China at this time of year, there're many ways to escape the scorching heat of major cities. Some go to the beach, some to the grasslands in Inner Mongolia, or the Tibetan plateau. Another choice is the bamboo forest in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

Walking into the bamboo forest, four hours from Sichuan's capital, Chengdu, is like walking into Zhang Yimou's film "House of Flying Daggers", with warriors flying and fighting amongst towering bamboo trees.

With an area of 120 square kilometers, the scenic spot is 87 percent covered by bamboos and other plants, so visitors are immersed in green, shedding all their city worries and stress.

With its natural scenery, this tourist spot near the city of Yibin is hailed as "one of ten most beautiful forests in China", and "one of 40 best tourist destinations".

To explore the forest, one can walk or ride cable cars. As well as the greenery, there are more than 120 outstanding natural and cultural spots to visit. The thick bamboo forest helps you escape the summer heat, whether it is taking a dip in the cool creeks, or rowing a bamboo raft and hum relaxing tunes.

Rounding off the experience is a bamboo feast. All dishes are made from parts of bamboo trees and other local natural and healthy ingredients, with plenty of choices for vegetarians. So if you're desperate for a break from the city, head down to the land of pandas.
