There are 22 public libraries in Tel Aviv and about half a million people check out books each year. The concept here is instead of bringing the people to the books, bring the books to the people.
The beach library offers up to 500 books in five different languages to anyone who wants to catch up on their reading while spending time at the sea.
The library works on the honor system. There's sign out list, no librarian or magnetic card. The librarians trust borrowers to return reading material to the shelves before heading home. So far it’s working.
An added perk for more tech-inclined patrons is free WiFi along the city’s 14-kilometer shoreline for reading books on tablets or e-book readers.
Tel Aviv gets 300 sun-filled days per year. That's a lot of potential reading time.
