Bartoli says goodbye to the tennis world with her loss in round two but the top seeds at the event in action on Wednesday Serena Williams, Sera Errani and Petra Kvitova were all able to punch their ticket for round three.
And the defending champion at the Cincinnati Masters, China's fifth seeded Li Na, was looking to join them as she faced American teenager Lauren Davis in the second round.
Davis made a superb start, breaking Li twice en route to a commanding 4-0 first set lead. But the Chinese came back at her strongly, reeling off five straight games to lead the set 5-4. The American then held firm to take the set 6-4, but faltered from there as Na proved resurgent.
Li would then find another gear as she took the final two sets in emphatic style, 6-1, 6-1, to book her place in the third round of the tournament. There she will face the ninth seed Angelique Kerber of Germany.
