At Flushing Meadows where round one play of the final grand slam of the season was continuing Tuesday. Five time US Open champ Roger Federer got his run underway albeit one day later than scheduled after rain delayed his opener against Slovenia's Grega Zemlja. The performance from the Swiss master though well worth the wait.
Federer comes into this edition of the US Open as the seventh ranked player in the world his lowest spot in a decade. Federer though, would be in vintage form serving well in set one six aces carried him to a 6-3 win.
And Federer continued his strong play in set two while Zemlja self destructed making five double faults and eleven unforced errors. It would only take Federer 23 minutes to win the second set 6-2.
The third set would be a closer affair as Zemlja broke Federer late to tie the set up at 5-5 but the Swiss veteran would bounce back breaking Zemla in the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead and he would serve it out to take the third 7-5 and move on to round two in straight sets.
