Fifteen people are known to have been killed after a liquid ammonia leak at a cold-storage warehouse in Shanghai.
The incident took place on Saturday morning, and rescue operations in the Baoshan district had been completed by mid-afternoon. At least twenty five people were hospitalized, including eight who are said to be in a serious condition. Doctors say many are suffering from burns of the respiratory tract caused by the ammonia.
Others have eye pain, dizziness and throat pains. Work safety authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. The Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau has been monitoring the area and says it has not found any evidence of damage to the local environment.
