The powerful typhoon came ashore at 7:40 p.m. on Sunday, bringing powerful winds and torrential rain.
All bullet trains from Guangzhou to Beijing have been suspended and hundreds of flights from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong have been cancelled. Schools in 12 coastal cities have suspended classes.
The National Meteorological Center issued the highest level of alert. It forecasts the storm will weaken as it moves northwest. Most of southern China area will see heavy downpours, with Fujian, Guangdong, and Taiwan the worst affected.
