Located 40 kilometres away from Dubai International airport, the new airport is part of the Dubai World Central project, or DWC. DWC is Dubai's largest urban development project and will comprise six zones including logistics, residence, commerce and golf.
The whole plan is expected to cost more than 32 billion US dollars. The CEO says the airport aims to dominate air travel.
"What we are building is an airport hopefully for the future, that will be largest in terms of capacity for international passenger traffic. That's the dimension we are working on. When you actually set out to build an airport that large, we will probably break a few other records as well. We are planning 5 runways, we are planning a passengers capacity of 100 millions, possibly even as far as 200 millions. And then of course, with that will come with a huge amount of freight, probably at least 12 million tons per annum." Said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.
