Run Run Shaw: media tycoon and philanthropist

Hong Kong's entertainment industry and numerous charities are mourning the passing of media tycoon and philanthropist, Run Run Shaw, who died at the age of 107 on Tuesday. Over the course of his life, Shaw donated billions of yuan for various social projects.

In 1985, Shaw cast his attention to the mainland, donating 10 million yuan to a project to preserve ancient cave paintings and a grant to Zhejiang University. He also donated more than 100 million yuan every year to support education on the Chinese mainland.

Shaw has donated money to 5,000 schools and education projects across 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. He also allocated money to establish the Run Run Shaw Prize known as the Nobel Price of the east that awards excellence in science and research.

In 1999, he donated 25 million HK dollars to Taiwan earthquake recovery efforts.

In 2005, he donated 10 million HK dollars to support those affected by Tsunami in South Asia.

In 2008, he gave 100 million HK dollars to support the reconstruction of schools affected by Sichuan earthquake.

His generousity earned the China Charity Lifelong Honorary Prize awarded by the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs in 2008.
