Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has held more talks with opposition leaders, as the stand-off between protesters and riot police continues.
The talks are the first since Ukraine’s opposition rejected a power sharing proposal from the president late on Saturday. Yanukovych offered Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who heads the Fatherland Party, the post of Prime Minister. He also offered the position of Deputy Prime Minister to boxer Vitaly Klitschko, leader of the Udar Party.
Yatsenyuk released a statement saying the opposition was ready to accept leadership of the country, but he said he wouldn’t be accepting Yanukovych’s offer.
Klitschko said his party would continue to push for fresh presidential elections this year. Protests against the government began in November when Yanukovych refused to sign a trade agreement with the European Union in favour of stronger economic ties with Russia.
